Projects
Past Projects
Patrick has been involved in a number of diverse projects:
- Design of ancient Egyptian ship reconstruction
- Investigation into an incident on HMAS Nizam
- Stability assessment of fishing vessels operating off the Pacific coast of South America
- Numerical investigation into the performance of Mirror class dinghy sails
Sail like an Egyptian: Ancient Egyptian ship reconstruction
Somebrero and Co approached me to help with the design of a reconstruction of an ancient Egyptian ship from the reign of Queen Hatshepsut (around 1500 B.C.). I have been working with marine archeologists Cheryl Ward and Tom Vosmer. A TV documentary "Hatshepsout et le pays de Punt" is being produced by Valerie Abita (Somebrero and Co) and is being directed by Stephane Begoin.
Details of my design of the vessel were presented at the Royal Institution of Naval Architects (RINA) Historic Ships conference, in London, November 2009.

Numerical fluid simulation
A number of numerical modelling programs have been developed by Patrick. These include:
- Vortex lattice code for the calculation of aerodynamic forces on thin aerofoils
Vortex latice sail modelling code

Sail measurement tool developed by the author while working at Curtin University, Perth

- Slender body wave resistance code based on Michell's integral. This was used for the prediction of catamaran wave resistance
Incident/accident investigation and simulation
Numerical modelling and simulation tools have been used to gain a greater understanding of several marine incidents.
